When I started out, I used simple almost star shaped characters. I think about three inches is a good height, I used pretty thick legs, split about an inch apart with feet about the size of a quarter, the arms don't really matter, and not to top heavy of a head. Just keep it simple.

do you mean a model like this ian? here in the uk the closest sized thing we have to a quater is a ten pence so i made the feet to a ten pence:D

yep. that is looks fine, and as you get better and better you can get more advanced, but if you don't gonna have an armature, then that is a good shape.
