I don't really know, I am sure you can find some tutorials online. All I know is, it is a harder longer process than making clay puppets.

is there anyway I can make a puppet without the use of a polystyrene ball?

I use an Armaverse armature for characters that need a lot of movement. http://www.armaverse.com/

But if you want to make your own, or are on a small budget, you can make a wire and epoxy putty armature.
