It is best to start off with wire armatures,- I tried to run before I could walk and build a ball and socket armature myself, as I couldn't afford one- I still can't. Armature wire can be found on the web.

I am pretty sure Aardman machines their own armatures. They are using ball and socket armatures, which you really don't need when starting out. There are a bunch of tutorials online about how to make wire armatures, you can watch those and then sort of figure out the best way for you to make them. You aren't going to be able to get a good ball and socket armature for a good price, so it is best to build your own wire ones. A good wire armature is always better than a bad ball and socket armature.

Make sure you are getting 'annealed' aluminum wire, or it might just say 'armature wire'. Otherwise it will break. 16 gauge usually works the best.

For a good begginer armature, i would recommend this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Animation-Toolkit-ATK001-Basic-Armature/dp/B00D1SW59M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1377796148&sr=8-2&keywords=animation+toolkit
I use this one, and it is great. It seems a bit complicated to make at first, but once you've got the hang of it, it's perfect. Just be careful you don't lose any of it, because it comes with tiny little screws and bolts which can easily get lost. It also comes with eyeballs for your plasticine models. I highly recommend it.
