Why is it called "Aardman Studios"? What is a "Aardman"?

I can't remember where I heard this story, but I think Peter Lord said that he and David Sproxtan created a character called 'Aardman.' and when they decided to open a bank account with the money they made they decided to call the company 'Aardman.' They then went on to create Morph, and then Nick Park joined them with Wallace and Gromit and the rest is history.

And it is called Aardman studios because it is a studio.
