Hi gromitlove. Yes there was a popular beach called Kalapana Black Sand Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii that was great for swimming but a few years back either the lava flow blocked access to it or flowed over it entirely. I'm sure there are other black sand beaches still, but probably not as accessible and swimmer-friendly as the former one.

I think the other beach you're asking about is Barking Sands on the island of Kauai. I'm not sure how it got it's name (maybe someone heard a Hawaiian Monk Seal barking?) and I've never been to that beach. It's kind of isolated. But there's a military missile range located close by where they test all kinds of things, including pilotless planes.

Oy...the thread jumped to the next page! Hey, good research Harry and nice pics on that link. Come to think of it, I do recall at least one of the other black sand beaches listed. Maybe I'll try looking up the Barking Sands beach.

okay, here's a pretty funny write-up of Barking Sands beach:

and here's some pics of another beach that Barking Sands is a part of:

Thanks so much squigly and Harry. Years ago my teacher read us "Island of the Blue Dolphins" by Scott O'Dell, about a girl on San Nicolas island off California. I imagined the headlands looking just like the hills in the Barking Sands picture.

As for the mystery of Barking Sands's name, now that I know that the sand does not actually bark when you walk on it, I guess that an important but socially misfitting fellow named Sands was sent off the mainland to run the military base in the early XXth century.

gromitlove Posted: May 9th 2008

Hello all,
Now I too wonder where Josephine has gone-- but the very first entry on this thread all those pages ago said that Josephine seems to have gone missing.
Sploosh!

Josephine Posted: May 9th 2008

Hello, my wonderful friends! Never fear, Sock Eye is here!

Please excuse my intermitent entries on this, our beloved website at the moment. I'm still busy with the church restoration and - in between all that - some writing, helping mum and sister with some decorating - so, it has been a bit like buses - nothing comes for a while then three things come all at once!!!

So, for the moment, it's a matter of coming back on the forum when I can squeeze a moment, if you see what I mean...

Oh, by the way - has anyone seen that ad on the telly with the talking, grinning dandelion that says "Hello, mate!"?

Looks like another genius Aardman job. What do you say?

I have time for a sploosh!

KERRRRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSSSPPPLLLLOOOOOOOOSSSHHH!!!!

Tee hee!

See you when I have another minute to squeeze - sometime soon, hopefully!!!!

Yours
Sock Eye Salmon

:D

Fish Posted: May 9th 2008

Good to swim with you again, Sock Eye! :)

arthur 2 Posted: May 10th 2008

finally SOCKEYE IS BACK! LETS SWIM:)

Mark the shark Posted: May 10th 2008

SOCK EYE! WAHOO! THE WATER IS COMPLETE AGAIN! Get your surfboards ready, cause here comes the shark!
SPLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHHH! :D

squigly Posted: May 10th 2008

WIPEOUT!!!!

Hey, gromitlove...good to see you splooshing in for a swim with us. Aaaa...that must be Admiral Sands, known to bark out orders louder than the native Hawaiian Monk Seals. He was so loud, they could hear him from the beach! teehee

Crumbs...I missed sockeye again! And Fish! And Sharkie!! Oh well, nothing more for a squid to do but go for a swim..
SSSSHHHHHHHHHPPPPPPPPPPPLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMM!!!!!!

Fish Posted: May 10th 2008

Hi, squigly - I'm glad you are swimming with us!:) How's the weather in paradise these days?

We've got endless rain at the moment. It's starting to make even my dog a bit cross. Poor lad got left out in the rain - nothing worse than a soggy doggy!:O But he cheered right up again when I brought him in and toweled him down. That's dogs for you! Forgive and forget! :D

cinders1 Posted: May 11th 2008

hi fish seems like youve been swimming on your own for a while, ive been busy decorating so ive not been around, going shopping later, see if i can find some snazzie cushions, but im not going to hold my breath as ive been to aprox 30 places that sale cushions and i dont like any of them!!!!!! got one place left to go!!!! keep your fingers crossed for me, otherwise im going to look for material and have them made,:-|

i expect sockeye being in the same country as me is up to the same things at the moment, its just got hot like the middle of summer for some reason and its beautiful, shorts and tee shirts are out with the ole BBQ, and theres always plenty of gardening to get done this time of year, and the weather seems settled too:O so i guess shes making hay while the sun shines;) oops sorry its just jumped a few pages!!!!

hallamorr1 Posted: May 11th 2008

hi i'm new

cinders1 Posted: May 11th 2008

hi hallamorr 1 your welcome!!! just a tip maybe change your avatar as our fish has had that one for a long while and we will get you mixed up;)

hallamorr1 Posted: May 11th 2008

well okay

squigly Posted: May 11th 2008

hi hallamorr1. cinders has made a good suggestion. as a new person to this forum, you wouldn't want to get off on the wrong foot with the other forum members. you might try picking an avatar that noone is currently using.:)

hallamorr1 Posted: May 11th 2008

thanks i haven't done anything wrong have i?

squigly Posted: May 11th 2008

well, you've changed it so that's good! it get's quite confusing when people use the same avatar, especially something as unique as Fish's alien smiley abduction avatar. some forum members also can get quite upset. you made the right choice to change it. btw...i like the new one.

666joshy666 Posted: May 11th 2008

Hello Squigly!:D

hallamorr1 Posted: May 11th 2008

thanks so do i;)

squigly Posted: May 11th 2008

Hi joshy! Or, I should say good morning (for you). How's your model coming along?

hallamorr1 Posted: May 11th 2008

cij

Mark the shark Posted: May 11th 2008

Yeah, it's like July for us Scots too. :O

Fish Posted: May 11th 2008

Hello everyone! Glad to hear from you Cinders!!|-) I suspect if we had summer weather here I might be drawn to the computer a bit less too! It's nonstop rain here!

Welcome Hallamorr1! I've arrived too late to see that you the same avatar - I like the one you've got now. Thanks for changing.
