Aspect Ratios

Aspect Ratios are a way of telling how wide the images in a film are. Aspect Ratios often get people confused. The aspect ratio of an image is its width divided by its height. Aspect ratios are mathematically expressed as x:y (pronounced "x-to-y") and x×y (pronounced "x-by-y").
The most common aspect ratios in movie theatres these days are 1:85:1 or 2:39:1 (or can be reduced to 2:35:1 or rounded up to 2:40:1). If you have a square TV in your house (which I am not embarrassed to admit that I have!:wink then you should probably see that when you are watching a film that was produced for cinemas that the image has to be reduced and sandwiched between two horizontal black bars at the bottom and top of the image. This is also known as...the Letterbox.This happens as it is impossible to cram a rectangle into a square! Most cinema films are filmed in a common format called CinemaScope or 'Scope.

Frog Blast is still a short animated production (30mins long approx), but certain scenes are VERY complex! Although it is for a square screen, we wanted a kind of cinematic look (like & shorts as Nick Park said) so we have decided to format it in 1:85:1 format. If you have a square TV, then don't expect to see BIG black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. You will see them though. Well, that's all friends but I might post another chapter on Saturday! Fingers crossed, folks!

Character Personalities

Hi, another chapter to the Behind the Scenes forum! Tonight, I am going to tell you about the character personalities and how much we depend on them to tell our stories.

Let's start with Chrisara the frog! He's a frog that is selfish and quite a snob. He has no family or friends but deep down in his heart, does wish he did. He is a cool, easy-going teenager who is determined to show everyone that he does have a proper heart. Or well, he thinks he does. He has an entire oasis to himself which he has spoilt himself rotten. His little bedroom inside a small cave is packed with things like posters (of & and Green Day. Typical teenager) and other things a typical teenager has. Overall, he is deeply in love with himself.

Let's move onto Badger. In every way, he is stupid, infuriating, stubborn and narrow-minded. Well, to Chrisara anyway. Although he is the stupidest thing in the Sahara Desert, he is kind-hearted and the most loyal creature on the planet. He would give his life for his friends without hesitation. He thinks Chrisara will be his greatest friend but he soon realises how selfish Chrisara REALLY is. Badger has a taruma past (which you will just have to see the film to find out about) but he has never let himself be bothered by it. Overall, he wishes from the very bottom of his heart Chrisara could be more like a real friend.
