Lewis Costello Posted: Oct 6th 2007

Posted.

I'd like to become an animator.

However I've never actually taken the time to animate.

I'm getting a camera in December, so that's the big issue taken care of.

But could you recommend some material/books?;)

jordan Posted: Oct 7th 2007

Hi Lewis there are some great books.

First One Is Cracking Animation the top book to have.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cracking-Animation-Aardman-Book-3-D/dp/050051190X/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/202-3442136-5072639?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191747073&sr=8-1

also Stop Motion: Craft Skills for Model Animation (Focal Press Visual Effects and Animation)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stop-Motion-Skills-Animation-Effects/dp/0240516591/ref=pd_bbs_3/202-3442136-5072639?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191747073&sr=8-3

and The Complete Animation Course: The Principles, Practice and Techniques of Successful Animation

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Animation-Course-Principles-Techniques/dp/0500284377/ref=pd_bbs_4/202-3442136-5072639?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1191747073&sr=8-4

there the top 3 books i recommend

jordan Posted: Oct 7th 2007

To: Gonnor Gorman i have been doing animations for 6-7 years and im not posting any films sorry

connor gorman Posted: Oct 7th 2007

ok

animation boy Posted: Oct 7th 2007

the complete animation course is a bit "out of date" and has a very small bit on stop motion.

Cracking animations is a good read but doesnt really say anyathing about the equipments or materials needed for animation.

the other one ive not read.

The book i recommend is; the animation survival book. Although its mainly 2-d, it covers the movement and anatomy of animation. It is £20, but there is lots to read =)

Hutch Posted: Oct 7th 2007

I'll keep this in mind Jordan;)

Nofby Posted: Oct 6th 2008

Jordan, have you any animation whatsoever you can show us? If you've been doing it for so long, you must have something to show for it? Why not post any, or do you need a big watermark on every frame

Hi conty
Yes!! mrs cavor does tooo much baking, will have to go on a diet soon.... before I go up another trouser size, would hate not fitting into me trousers (The Wrong ones):D

No haven't done any art stuff for a very long time but I'm getting that sort of itch the type that only a bit of creativity can satisfy so hopefully I will be doing something shortly

Say hi to cinders for me, stay good

Cavor

cinders1 Posted: Oct 15th 2008

chocachoc cavors creations are always brilliant, did you miss cavors wrong trousers? they were so funny and brilliant and he was wearing them!!!!
i think we should have a member search on this site so that we can see all the creations made by that member in one hit|-)

Chocachoc Posted: Oct 15th 2008

I agree! Great idea :D!

kameatrix Posted: Oct 18th 2008

um, i have 2 things- 1,why do all the animation events take place in england and not scotland? 2,are there any animation clubs in scotland??

plasjas Posted: Oct 18th 2008

yeah i wonder the smae thing are their any in scotland if not i shall create one...or die trying

Chocachoc Posted: Oct 19th 2008

I think its because aardman are in England, so they have all of the main stuff in England.

jills Posted: Oct 19th 2008

Surely Aardman aren't the only animators around the UK...

Ko Lik Films Ltd is a stop frame animation studio based in Edinburgh, Scotland http://www.scottishanimationgroup.co.uk/dir/ko-lik-films

It's not an event but maybe a starting point... check the News section of that link for possible events.

Chocachoc Posted: Oct 19th 2008

Oh, I thought you were talking about aardman, sorry.

jills Posted: Oct 19th 2008

I think they are looking for anything animation-related to do in Scotland.

Nofby Posted: Oct 19th 2008

Jills, you're absoloutely right. There is Cosgrove Hall, Loose Moose, Bolex Brithers, Tandem Films... etc.

Cosgrove Hall did Bob the Bulder, Postman Pat, Engy Benjy etc.

They are now doing a new series 'Rupert the bear'.

Sadly 'Bob the Builder' is going to be made in CG noe.

Loose Moose did Hamilton Mattress (Older members might remember? ;) )

crackingcheese Posted: Oct 19th 2008

Really?

I remember that I loved it

and i loved his burrow we have it on tape somewhere

Nofby Posted: Oct 19th 2008

Yep, how many years ago? 5 maybe?

cavor Posted: Oct 19th 2008

Just looked, can you believe it was back in 2001 http://www.barrypurves.com/Films/Hamilton%20Mattress/index.html how time fly's

crackingcheese Posted: Oct 19th 2008

honesly doesnt seem like that

Nofby Posted: Oct 19th 2008

Yea, I thought it was 5 or 6 years back. It would be great if they made a new series, but its a golden oldy :)

Ursrut Posted: Oct 19th 2008

I really don't like the rupert bear in CG i used to absolutely adore watching him when i was younger.

Nofby Posted: Oct 19th 2008

He's stopmotion animated now, like I said. Cosgrove Hall are a stopmotion studio like Aardman

cavor Posted: Oct 19th 2008

You also have Siriol Productions in Wales now I believe are called Calon TV who gave us the last the new series of Fireman Sam and another stop mo series called Hana's Helpline;)

plasjas Posted: Oct 19th 2008

yeah but none of those are in scotland, but thanks jills i will check

Chocachoc Posted: Oct 19th 2008

Hay, Nofby. Could you write some more claymation companies because im trying to get an extra work experience at the moment.

plasjas Posted: Oct 19th 2008

hmm maybe i could get work expeirience at Ko Lik Films Ltd

jills Posted: Oct 19th 2008

Oh, I see what you were thinking, Chocachoc.

chazza Posted: Oct 20th 2008
