Try this smashing recipe for mini Wallace and Gromit charcacter cakes! The techniques used in this recipe are quite difficult - if your are fairly new to baking you might want to try the cupcake recipe in our forum first.

This recipe was adapted from “Wallace and Gromit: Cracking Celebration Cakes” by Debbie Brown. If you’d like to try more projects from this book it is available to buy online at http://www.squires-shop.com or call Squires Kitchen on 0845 22 55 67 1/2

Ingredients
5cm (2”) cube tin set (mixture for 12 sections)
6x7cm (2 ¾”) square cake cards

175g (6oz) Unsalted butter, softened
175g (6 oz) ) Caster/superfine sugar
3 large eggs
175g (6oz) Self-raising flour
90g (3oz) Plain/ all-purpose flour
Edible glue or icing
175g (6oz) buttercream (see recipe below)

145g of blue, cream, lilac, pale green, pale peach and pink sugarpaste
10g of black, red, white, brown, pale brown, orange and pale blue sugarpaste
Note: Sugarpaste is sometimes called rolled fondant and is available through any good supermarket or cake decorating outlets. Feel free to substitute colours, ours are only there as a guide!

Buttercream
Beat 45g of softened unsalted butter, 1 tbsp of milk, a drop of vanilla essence and 110g of icing sugar until light, fluffy and pale in colour. Store in an airtight container and use within 10 days.

Cake
1. Preheat the oven to 150°/325°F/Gas Mark 3
2. Grease your tin with margarine
3. Sift both types of flour into a bowl together
4. Soften the butter and mix together with the sugar – beat until pale and fluffy
5. Add 1 egg and 1 spoon of flour to the mixture, beat well and then repeat until all 3 eggs have been mixed in
6. Using a spatula, fold in the remaining flour
7. Spoon the mixture into your tin and place into the centre of the oven for 30-40 mins.
8. Once cooked, leave to cool and then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely, ready for decorating.

Decorating
1. Dampen the cake cards with a little cooled, boiled water.
2. Knead 20g of coloured sugarpaste until soft and then roll out on a non-stick surface
3. Cover the cake card with paste, smooth down and then trim away the excess
4. Set aside and leave to dry
5. Repeat for each cake card in different colours (use photos as a guideline)

6. Trim the crust from each cake and level off if needed
7. Spread a little buttercream on the underside of each cake and stick to the cake card
8. Spread more buttercream round the outside of the cake to help the sugarpaste stick.
9. Using the remaining sugarpaste, cover each cake in a different colour to the card (use the picture as a guideline), smoothing the paste down around the shape
10. Trim away the excess from around the base, taking care not to damage the covered card.
11. Print out the templates from the bottom of the page and trace them onto greaseproof paper. Use them to cut out pieces of different coloured sugarpaste for your characters.
12. Start by cutting out the outline of the face and then add layers on top for additional facial features, sticking each one with a bit of icing or edible glue.
13. Leave to dry and then enjoy!

Thanks for this recipe. I will definitely give it a try. I am a real sweet tooth and due to this I love baking. The cakes seem to be very elaborate but although I hope I will make it. Never thought about baking such cakes but I am of the opinion that this is a very good idea. Love it.
